handing over the Sukma torch to Bayau, local mascot for
Sukma Sabah 2002, at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport
Thursday. Bayau (or friend) reflects the proboscis monkey
endemic to the Borneo Island, with the most popular viewing
spots for tourists being in the Kinabatangan area (east
coast) and Klias Peninsular (west coast).
Earlier, Penang Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Helmi Haji
Yahya handed over the torch to his Sabah counterpart Datuk
Wences Angang, upon arrival from Penang which last hosted
the Sukma series in 2000.
Torch bearer Zainuddin Sudin, who led the run, was accompanied
by a group of flag bearers who will participate in the
Sukma this year.
Today (Friday), the Sukma torch will be flown to Tawau,
on Sabah's east coast, for the first stage of the run
in the State on Saturday. Sukma Sabah 2002 will involve
some 3,000 participants representing the various states
in the country, in Kota Kinabalu from Sept 5 to 14.
